About Sam

In this long established family business, old traditions die hard. The primary tradition is that of quality and value for money. Another tradition is that Sam is not Sam, but Manu Melwani. The first Sam was his Father, who established the business. You are most likely to meet Manu in the shop or on one of his regular visits to to Europe and the United States. It is important to him to maintain a good relationship with clients past and present- a good tailor needs to know a lot about you.

It is this tradition of personalised Tailoring, passed down from Manu’s father to Manu, which will continue, forming the basis of what has become a global institution. Sam’s is a family tradition that is recognised everywhere. You can find his suits in any country, since Sam clothes the movers and shakers of this world. When you go through the global Who’s-Who, the question you almost have to ask yourself is “Who hasn’t been to Sam’s?”

Sam’s Clients

Sam's Archive of customer names and measurements record the details of the rich and famous that have come to buy suits. Sam allows himself the little luxury of putting up pictures of some of his better known clients in the shop. The faces of HM Queen Elizabeth the II, Princes Phillip and Charles; Presidents Reagan, Ford, Bush Snr and Clinton; Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair and Bob Hawke; John McEnroe, George Michael, Michael Jackson, Boris Becker,, Kylie Minogue, David Bowie, and Richard Gere look on whilst you are fitted in your finery at Sam's.

Manu Melwani

Manu Melwani, Hon Phd., F. Inst. D., FRSA, Medal of Honour and recipient of Belgium's Golden Palms of the Order of the Crown, is nearly as well known as some of his clients. A quiet man, he was surprised when he was asked for his autograph by one of his better known clients. "The first time it happened, I was just intrigued that such a a famous person had their own autograph book," says Manu. "Given the healthy egos of show-biz people, it makes you wonder why they look up their contemporaries. Her book was full of the signatures and messages of others who constantly make the front pages. I don't feel that I'm famous in that sense, I am only a tailor after all. But yes it's flattering to be asked, and hopefully it reflects well on Sam's as an entity."

Roshan Melwani

Roshan Melwani Ba, 31, is Manu’s son, and is in the shop day-in, day-out helping his father to run the business. Roshan puts his interest in Tailoring entirely down to his father: “He’s been on my case about how I dress and how I should dress and how I present myself in any situation since I was eleven.” Roshan is a man familiar with the world around him, having lived in several countries. He has a business degree from New York University and wants to take the family business forward, with new ideas like the Website and the Environmental Policy. “We hope to replace all our bags (suit covers and shirt wrappings) with something more environmentally friendly and hope to soon stop using paper at work and make everything digital.”

Finding Sam’s

Sam’s is located in Tsim Sha Tsui, a traditional Tailoring district in Hong Kong. It is also a district with the highest concentration of Hotels in Hong Kong, famous for its fine restaurants and five of Hong Kong’s main Museums, of Art, of Space, the Cultural Center, of History and of Science. When you are done with the Museums you can relax in Kowloon Park, take the Star Ferry and, of course, shop. Sam’s is one of the main attractions in this vibrant commercial district.

Sam's Tailor is located opposite Park Lane Shoppers' Boulevard, at Kowloon Park. * Take the Tsuen Wan (Red Line) route on the MTR and get off at Tsim Sha Tsui. * Make your way to Exit B1, go up the stairs and turn right. * Sam's Tailors is past the HSBC bank building.
